How to Replace Forward Slash with Backward Slash in Javascript
In this tutorial, you will learn how to replace forward slash with backward slash in javascript. Backward slash is also known as backslash and it is very commonly seen in computer coding. Like other programming languages, backward slash is an escape character in javascript. There are certain characters in javascript that have special meaning or usage such as single quote, double quote, and even backward slash. To display those characters, we have to use a backward slash just before the character.
Forward slash (/) is also known as slash and it is very commonly seen in URLs.
There are numerous ways to replace the forward slash with backward slash. We are going to use the simplest approach which involves the usage of the regex pattern as well as replace() method. The replace() method searches the string for a particular value or a regex pattern and it returns a new string with the replaced values.
In the following example, we have one global variable that holds a string. Upon click of a button, we will replace the forward slash with backward slash and display the result on the screen. Please have a look over the code example and the steps given below.
HTML & CSS
- We have 3 elements in the HTML file (
div,button, andh1). Thedivelement is just a wrapper for the rest of the elements. - The
innerTextfor thebuttonelement is“Replace”. - We have done some basic styling using CSS and added the link to our
style.cssstylesheet inside theheadelement. - We have also included our javascript file
script.jswith ascripttag at the bottom.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="ie=edge">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css">
<title>Document</title>
</head>
<body>
<div class="container">
<button>Replace</button>
<h1>Result</h1>
</div>
<script src="script.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
.container {
text-align: center;
}
button {
margin-top: 10px;
padding: 10px 20px;
}
Javascript
- We have selected the
buttonelement andh1element using thedocument.querySelector()method and stored them inbtnReplaceandoutputvariables respectively. - We have attached a
clickevent listener to thebuttonelement. - We have a global variable
myStringwhich holds a string as its value. - We are displaying the original string in the
h1element using theinnerTextproperty. - In the event handler function, we have
regexvariable that holds a regex pattern/\//gas its value. - We are calling
replace()method and passingregexand backward slash (\) as parameters. As a result, it will replace all occurrences of forward slash with backward slash (\). The new string returned by this method will be stored in theresultvariable. - We are displaying the
resultin theh1element using theinnerTextproperty.
let btnReplace = document.querySelector("button");
let output = document.querySelector("h1");
let myString = "John can type at 75 w/m and he drives car at 50 km/h.";
output.innerText = myString;
btnReplace.addEventListener("click", () => {
let regex = /\//g;
let result = myString.replace(regex, "\\");
output.innerText = result;
});
